Although I can't believe it's been three years since our "Miracle" was born, I'm having a hard time with the fact that he doesn't start kindergarten for another 2 AND 1/2 years! He is a handful to say the least, terrible three's are upon us - I thought it was supposed to be terrible two's. Malcolm's spunk, curiosity, general disobedience and such is reflective of how he made his way into this world.
Most of you know, those who didn't now will, that we tried for 8 years for a child, after 6 of those years we began the process of adopting and after 2 years we received our "Gift" of Jesse (more on him in May). We knew we didn't want an only child, so in the summer of 2005 we began the process of updating our file and preparing to place ourselves out there again to adopt. In the meantime, because of a non-life threatening female condition, I was scheduled for a hysterectomy the beginning of September 2005.
The beginning of July 2005, we paid the adoption agency a cool Thousand dollars & began our home study. The beginning of August we left for a cousin's wedding in South Carolina when I noticed I was gaining weight (the bride's maid dress now fit tightly through the bust)and feeling terrible; tired, sick, weak, ornery. I thought I had something really bad. We also found out we were approved to adopt and our file would be released for birth parents to review.
Upon arriving back home from our travels, I called the doctor's office. After explaining how sick I was, they told me to take a pregnancy test - I was flabbergasted, after 10 years of not being able to get pregnant, they would ask me to take a pregnancy test. I did, there was a very, VERY faint +, I was scheduled for an ultra-sound the next afternoon.
Looking at the black & white screen at the doctor's office, Bubba and I couldn't have been in more shock, there was a little kidney-bean-shaped embryo, with a beating heart - not more than 7 weeks old. I think the doctor was disappointed that we weren't jumping up and down, seriously we were in shock and I was just a tiny bit disappointed, this meant no hysterectomy, being tired and nauseous, gaining weight and not going to lunch after receiving the baby.
Since we didn't want twins of any kind, we pulled back the file with the adoption agency and began to relish the "Miracle" that was to be - we realized that I had tried to schedule, in June, my surgery for sometime in July & August and just couldn't get my schedule and the doctor's schedule to sync up.
Right after Bubba and I got married we picked out names for our boys, yes, we were only going to have boys (if I had any say). Bubba is a III and it's such a common name I didn't want to give that to a IV. So our first would be David Jesse - the middle name coming from Bubba's maternal grandfather, Jesse Jerome Wheeler. Our second we wanted to incorporate my dad's name Spencer as a middle name, not picking it for any reason other than it sounded right, we decided on Malcolm, Malcolm Spencer. BTW, third name we picked, not to be used anytime soon (I told Bubba we could try to adopt again after Lillie is 5) is Christopher Jerome.
Reason I go through this is because Malcolm is not named after Malcolm X, he's also not named after "Malcolm In The Middle" - though he is in the middle! I found out that it is a name of Scottish origin, a succession of Kings named Malcolm - my heritage is Scottish, it was pure inspiration and meant to be.
Malcolm arrived with a plethora of dark black, stick straight hair, fair skin and jaundice that lasted almost 3 weeks - what a nightmare. He's been a blessing, challenge and can make us smile for both reasons. I love that boy, Happy 3rd Little Man!

Malcom is such a cutie! I can't believe he's 3 (which by the way, is the new 2, or so I've heard)! What a little man!
I love that story. I didn't know that you weren't jumping off the table excited though :) that's funny our reactions aren't always what we'd expect.
He still looks so much like you. What a cutie.
I have 5..4 of them are like your little Malcom. I know it's early to say, but I'm sure Nathan will be as spunky as the rest :) ha ha
I can't wait for Christopher ! :) another little surprise for you both.
What a great story K! He sure is a cutie...happy birthday! We thought three was the new two - full of cuteness but LOADS of drama!
